I have worked on commercial fishing boats in the Bering Sea as a groundfish observer, I have friends who commercially fish for a living, and I am an avid recreational fisherwoman myself. Understanding the perspectives of those who rely on marine resources is critical to developing sustainable management plans. Proper science communication is incredibly important in order to create a common ground between those who study fish, those who eat fish, and those who catch fish.
